Final Art Project
Hello everyone! In this blog, I will share how I created my final art project for class,
along with my thoughts. Before jumping into the creative process, I took time to map out what I wanted to accomplish with this final design challenge. My goal was to create a piece that blends both traditional and digital art forms, something that lets me experiment with what I learned in this class. I wanted this project to push me creatively, especially in terms of composition, color theory, and perspective.
I decided that instead of designing a product for sale, I would focus on creating a visually engaging artwork that could eventually become part of my architecture portfolio. This challenge also felt like the perfect opportunity to stretch my skills and experiment with different media and digital alterations.
Planning:
My initial concept centered around creating an image that used strong linear perspective to draw the viewer’s eye into the space. I started with a small sketch in my regular sketchbook, refining the angles, proportions, and overall structure until I landed on a composition I really liked.
Once I was satisfied with the idea, I moved on to my larger art sketchbook, approximately 14"x20", to recreate the design at scale. Drawing on such a large surface was definitely more difficult, but it also allowed me to add more detail, intentional line work, and a clearer sense of depth.
Painting:
After transferring the sketch onto my larger sketchbook, I decided to use complementary colors to create something visually pleasing and fun. To help me, I used Coolors to select the colors I needed. This is where I used orange and blue (the orange may be hard to see). After painting, I attempted to make the painting look like light was coming out of it. This didn't work as well as I thought, but it gave me my final outcome. While I do enjoy the artwork itself, I wanted to create more enthusiasm or grab people's attention, so I used Gemini to help change my painting into something else using AI. This gave me a fun final outcome, which I love!
Overall Thoughts:
Overall, this project challenged me in the best possible ways. I learned how important it is to document each stage of the creative process—even the parts that feel messy or uncertain—because every step contributes to the final outcome. Working traditionally taught me patience and precision, while the digital phase encouraged experimentation and opened up possibilities I wouldn’t have discovered otherwise.
Some parts were definitely difficult, like scaling up my sketch to a much larger format or trying to create a lighting effect that didn’t quite go as planned. But those struggles led to unexpected solutions and “happy accidents” that helped shape the final piece.
My biggest success was realizing how much potential there is in combining traditional and digital art. The contrast between the two mediums created something more dynamic and expressive than either version alone. I also feel more confident now in my ability to use perspective, color relationships, and composition intentionally—not just instinctively.
In the end, I’m proud of what I created. This project didn’t just give me a final artwork; it gave me a deeper understanding of my own creative process and a clearer sense of how I want to grow as an artist and designer. I’m excited to carry what I learned here into my architecture portfolio and future projects.
Thanks for reading and coming along with me on this creative journey!
